Chapter Twenty

Eliza clicked her tongue and tapped the reins on the horse’s back, trying to get the old girl to move a little faster on the long, winding mountain driveway to the Ebersol house. The October sun hung low, casting pinks and purples across the sky. It’d be dark soon, and she pulled her thick, handmade sweater tighter around her shoulders.

Staying busy was her only sanity of late. Remembering the past while watching Jesse build a new future was something she hadn’t known to prepare herself for. But in truth, nothing could’ve prepared her for the loneliness she felt. She’d voluntarily given up her husband, her home, the life they’d built. Her decision had cost Ruth her love. Eliza swallowed hard and refocused her thoughts.

She had several quick-woven blankets and three scrap blankets she’d made the past week while Moses worked. She also had the start of a quilt, but she was doubtful that it could be done before the wedding. Added to those, she had the quilts she’d already made to sell, which Aunt Bette had shipped to her. Eliza would complete more quick blankets later, but she wanted to at least give Jesse’s mamm some proof of the work she was doing, an assurance that Eliza was decreasing her workload and stress about the upcoming wedding. Amanda Ebersol had ten children, including Jesse. The five younger ones were still at home. Helping with this was no issue, especially with all Jesse was doing for Moses. When Eliza and Jesse had married, she’d received so many lovely gifts she was still putting to good use as of a week ago, when she’d changed time.

Now he was marrying someone else in only three weeks. Could it really be? It still felt surreal. But it was what he needed. To spare him pain.

Finally Jesse’s parents’ house was in sight. It didn’t look as bad as her parents’ home. Perhaps the Ebersols hadn’t been as affected by the change. That was a small comfort. As she got closer, she saw a man painting some of the home’s clapboard siding. His movements were unmistakable. It was Jesse. What was he doing painting on a Saturday at nearly sunset? Her stomach churned with nerves. She’d thought he’d be out with Martha, and she was hoping to just give her work to his mamm. Now they’d have to talk for sure.

She pulled the rig to a stop next to the hitching posts. She couldn’t turn around and try later—he’d already seen her. Best get this over with. She hopped out and fastened the horse to the post, giving his snout a rub.

“Eliza?” Jesse had set the paintbrush down and was walking toward her.

She was right—he’d stopped to talk to her. “Hello. Sorry to drop by. I just wanted to give your mamm these quilts, rugs, and blankets.” She opened the door to the buggy wide so he could see.

He wiped his hands on a towel he’d pulled from his pocket, then touched the fabric, looking through the pieces.
